This week's La Tartine Gourmande recipe was chosen for Baby Bear. His most recent favorite food is bread ~ usually a plain ole slice of wheat bread or hamburger bun ~ this would be his first gougère.
I had high hopes for these little beauties. Anything bite-sized with cheese is bound to be good, right? Surprisingly, I wasn't in love. Yep, this is the first dish that didn't have me oohing and aaahing. Don't get me wrong, they are very tasty, but I just didn't love the airyness/egginess. I wanted them to be more like, well, bread.
Along with gruyere and parsley and Celiac-friendly quinoa flour, the recipe calls for 4 eggs, mixed in one at a time. It is this component that gives them their egginess. Too much for me. Mind you that didn't stop Billy Webb and I from popping in about 10 each. We're not the most portion-savvy eaters you'll ever meet. :)
Taste Testers: The recipe also called for cumin seeds, which I purposefully skipped thinking my munchkins might like them better. No such luck.
Emerson: What's that yummy smell?, she asked after waking from a nap. She eagerly took a bite, only to wrinkle her nose. Didn't like them.
Max: As soon as I placed one on his plate at dinner he popped it in his mouth. Billy and I glanced at each other and waited. Sure enough, a few seconds later his signature stick-my-tongue-out/get-this-out-of-my-mouth look appeared. We were so close! It was the Gruyere that did it for sure.
