Emerson and Max both LOVE to put money in their piggy banks. Somehow they regularly manage to find coins sprinkled around the house. For Max, each discovery is met with a giant smile and the exclamation "A COIN!" For Emerson, it usually involves a statement like "oooh, more money to buy my pony!".
Over the weekend, Emerson ran into the laundry room {where a bank is} and I then heard her rustling around. me ~ "what are you doing love?". her ~ "putting dollars in my bank". me ~ "great! did daddy give you money for helping?". her ~ "no, I snuck dollars out of his wallet."
I laughed at her honesty and wandered into the kitchen where I found his wallet flopped open on the counter. Scene of the crime. I then headed for the laundry room to assist in her theft and noticed she had not only snatched $1 bill, but a $20 as well! Again, I laughed. Of course, I did the grown-up thing and gave a mini lesson on money and amounts and showed her how to distinguish the value of a bill. "We just had a math lesson" was her happy response.
Well, all this money talk got me thinking about allowances. I wonder if now's the time. Emerson LOVES to help Mommy and Daddy. Make dinner, fold laundry, use a screw gun, clean up her room, clean up my room... Sure, there are lots of occasions where she earns $.50 and runs for her bank, but nothing regular and no real weekly chores. Time to fix that. I think September will be a great month to start a new job chart and weekly allowance. We're talking coins here people, not bills. And naturally, Maxi Bear will demand the same.
Fine by me, with all these paid helpers around my free time will be stacking up.
{Tell me, at what age did you start a weekly allowance?}
